HRAST · oak furniture workshop · Sarajevo · since 1994
Fig. 01 — stool leg, turned oak, ø 38 mm, 1 : 1
Stools, tables and a folding screen, cut from oak that grew on the Romanija plateau and dried three winters in our yard. Every piece is made for one person, signed underneath.
Quarter-sawn · 3 yrs air-dried · hand-planed · no screws
03Manifesto
We make furniture the slow way. One board of quarter-sawn oak, dried three years in the open, planed by hand and joined without a single screw. Nothing is kept in stock; each piece is drawn for the room it will live in, and built to outlive the house.

Ten weeks, six stops. Read sideways.
Week 0
You write, we visit or you visit. We measure the room, look at the light, drink a coffee. No catalogue, only questions.
Week 1
A pencil drawing at 1 : 10 and one detail at 1 : 1. You sign it or we start again. This sheet later becomes the order.
Week 2
We pull boards from the stack and lay them on the floor. Grain direction, colour, where the knots go — decided together.
Weeks 3 – 8
Legs are turned on the lathe, tenons cut by hand and wedged. Nothing is glued that cannot also be taken apart.
Week 9
Planed, not sanded, so the surface stays crisp. Two coats of hardwax oil rubbed in with a cloth, a week apart.
Week 10
We bring it ourselves, in a blanket, up the stairs. A small oil tin and a card with the tree’s number come with it.

08Voices
“The stool arrived wrapped in a blanket and the maker carried it up four floors himself. Eleven years on, it has not moved a millimetre.”
“We asked for a table for six. He asked how we argue at dinner, and made it 20 cm longer. He was right.”
“I sent a photograph of my grandmother’s screen. What came back was not a copy — it was the screen she would have bought now.”
